JOB DESCRIPTION- PART TIME MEN’S HEALTH DEVELOPMENT WORKER

Tipperary Rural Travellers’ Project (TRTP) promotes the empowerment
of Travellers at every level to negotiate and create their own
solutions to the issues of accommodation, education and
discrimination.

As part of this brief, we have been working with Traveller men in
efforts to improve health levels – both physical and mental. The
work has led to the active involvement of Traveller men in all age
groups – building self-determination and increasing awareness about
health and wellbeing.

PART-TIME COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER:

The overall role of the Community Health Worker is to provide
continuing support to these initiatives involving Traveller men, and
to help establish new initiatives that are Traveller-led and result in
improvement in overall health levels. It is essential that the worker
develops and supports innovative responses to the health needs of
Traveller men and improvements in their capacity to increase
awareness, mainstream service access and self-determination.

The role will be shared with a co-worker with whom responsibilities
and tasks will be shared. The worker will be responsible, in terms of
ongoing line management and review, to the Coordinator of TRTP.

The worker will be based in Tipperary Town and Cashel, but will be
expected to outreach to Travellers in the catchment area of the
Project (South Tipperary).

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST INCLUDE:

* Third level qualification in community development or equivalent,
_OR_ experience of working in a Community Development Organisation
involving Travellers.
* An excellent understanding of the issues affecting the Traveller
community.
* Experience of working with the Traveller community or groups
experiencing similar issues.
* Experience of advocating with and on behalf of the Traveller
Community
* Good facilitation and communication skills.
* Experience of working with the Traveller Community around physical
and/or mental health, or around broader social issues impacting on
health
* Computer skills, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
* The ability to work as part of a team
* Full clean driving licence.
* Garda Vetting

DESIRABLE ATTRIBUTES ASSOCIATED WITH THE POST INCLUDE:

* Experience of networking at a local regional and national level
with voluntary community and statutory agencies
* Report writing and evaluation skills
* Experience in fund raising and funding applications

AS A DEVELOPMENT WORKER YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO:

* Outreach work with Travellers already engaged in the work of the
Project.
* Support existing initiatives led and involving Traveller men that
aim to enhance physical and mental health.
* Develop the capacity of Traveller men to engage more effectively
with statutory agencies, with a particular focus on primary and
mainstream health services.
* Carry out some advocacy work, as the need arises, with regard to
health and wellbeing needs of Traveller men locally.
* Plan, organise and deliver training and education sessions to
Traveller men in leadership roles.
* Liaise with local regional and national community voluntary and
statutory agencies on a variety of issues, but with a particular focus
on health and wellbeing.
* Source funding as necessary.
* Engage, as part of a team within TRTP, in ongoing evaluation and
review. Review and evaluation will be undertaken within the overall
context of the South-east Traveller Health Strategic Plan (South-east
Traveller Health Network)
* Provide regular progress reports to the Management of the Project.
* Attend regular staff meetings
* Carry out any other duties as identified by the Project
Co-ordinator.
* Report to project coordinator
* Any other work as directed by Co-ordinator of Tipperary Rural
Traveller Project

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Flexibility around allocation of daily working hours will be
necessary. These will he agreed at by mutual consent with advance
notice, but may include post normal hours, late evenings, nights and
weekends.
